they come in different sizes and speed ratings, so it depends. For
example an EPM7032S at 100MHz (that's a 5V MAX7000 with 600 usable
gates) is $5.00 in singles at Arrow. the 3.3V version, EPM7032A at
100MHz is $1.75.

Altera sells a Student Edition development board. You DO NOT have to be
a student to buy this, anyone can. It contains a MAX7000 and a FLEX 10K
device. It's $149, and altera pays the shipping. Check their website
under the university program.
