I think one of the most common misconceptions people hold is that the US is an example of free market capitalism. Where political systems inevitably fail is that not everyone is willing to play buy the rules. If everyone were a hard worker who gave their best and didn't expect a profound and tremendous tangible reward, and who believed in the good of the whole over the good of the one, communism would probably work, and in fact, I've heard about a lot of small Neolithic societies that essentially practice a "pure" communism. If everyone were willing to work their hardest, accept the level of reward that society afforded their best work, and NOT SACRIFICE OTHERS (read: not do the sort of shell game that the higher ups in American corporations seem to do these days) to themselves to increase their profit, capitalism would work. But, people being people, it'll be impossible forever to get more than 2 dozen like-minded people together in one spot, so nothing will ever work just right.
