You're right. My brown Motorola databook (ca 1985) only has a single
page for the 1N400x parts.

One reason to spec the 1N4001 that I haven't seen anyone mention is
inventory management. If it will do the job and is used in other products,
you may be better off to go with the lower spec'd part.
