Which is why the Lesser GPL (previously known as the Library GPL) was written. You can use, for example, GCC to compile your propritary code, link it with the LGPL GCC libraries, and have a propritary (closed-source) product, even though you use (L)GPL tools to create it. You can even extend the GPLed GCC for your closed-source product and not have to give away the extensions. However, if you distribute your improved GCC, the GPL says you have to distribute the source, too.
