Atmel say that AVR us not an acronym, and does not have any meaning at all. AVR's are great microcontrollers though, take a look at the ATMega128 for example. 16mips @ 16mhz, nice clean architecture, low power, low-ish cost, free dev environment, including free GCC compiler, proper JTAG debugger interface.
