While a domain name is a domain name, and other than downright crooks, I'm not all that sure there's a huge difference from one to another, there are significant differences in hosting providers. The first question is what do you need? Do you need many gigabytes of space? Do you need the provider to build and maintain your web site? To you need them to provide a shopping cart? Do you intend to write your own cgis? To you need Perl, PHP, ASP, etc. etc. etc. What do you need in the way of metrics from the site? Do you need to provide email under you domain name? Mail reflectors? Once you have figured out the features you need, look at the space and the traffic you expect. Also think about your tolerance for response time. All of these things will affect how happy you are with a provider. I have a site hosted with TLCHost.net. They are CHEAP if you don't need huge amounts of space. On another site (which I am just setting up and haven't selected a hosting site for yet) I have needs for more storage, and with more storage, they get more on the pricey end. They give me a shell account with all the features I want, and a very nice interface for controlling the site and the email lists and very nice metrics. They are hosted on very fast servers so the performance is great. The site setup was quick and painless. They don't have a lot of the high-end features, though, and as I said, when you start looking at hundreds of megabytes, they are no longer cheap. So it depends as much on what you want and need. More hand holding will cost you more money, but it could be worth it to you. 72/73 de WB8RCR http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr didileydadidah QRP-L #1446 Code Warriors #35 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Colin Constant" To: Sent: Friday, January 16, 2004 4:19 PM Subject: Re: [OT]: Web hosting (was URL registration) > >Does anyone have any recommendations (or any thoughts at all, really) for > >Domain Name registration. > > > >TIA > >Colin > > > Thanks everyone.
