You do handle the "access bit" ("a" in most instructions)
correctly ? Se picture 4-7 on page 44 in data sheet DS39564B.

See also "Access Bank" on page 49.

You don't specificaly say that you *have* read this parts,
and from your questions it sounds as if you havn't... :-)
