Olin Lathrop says: >Sooner or later someone will enable code protection or disable low voltage >programming. In either case you're screwed whether it was intentional or >not. At the least you should have a few fully capable programmers in the >lab to recover when the inevitable happens. I fully agree. And the class will do just that at the time it has the least collective experience available to aid in recovery. Additionally, I might look at the timing and voltages, and see if a level converter pod between the boards could provide +13 for those occasions. Also, in the syllabus, the students will reproduce the needs analysis and any new design that they are willing to make at the *end* of the course, then they will submit their revised designs to a board house. They start with last year's design so they have hardware at the beginning of the course, then re-design after they have "Rev 1" experience. This puts them in the control loop, and puts design trade-offs fully in front of them for consideration. I am very pleased with this sequence inversion, but I am concerned that it will lead to "configuration management issues." There might be some advantage in the lab to having the +13 pod design ready to go and in the back of the lab manual. Then, they can use or abandon the additional complexity and capability as they choose. I need to look into that. >The ICD-2 uses a flat cable with two male ends. This causes the lines to >be flipped between the two ends. The signals coming out of the RJ-12 on >the ICD-2 are the mirror image of the signals expected by the RJ-12 on a >PICDem board. Is the ICD2 schematic available? >I don't think the schematic is available, but the RJ-12 connector pinout >is well documented. In other arenas, I would tend to accept the originating manufacturer's decisions as a standard. However, the PIC community hasn't done this. I would think that if this idea without serious problems, it would be the predominant connection in designs.
