Paul Horowitz, the principle author of "The Art of Electronics", is a professor of Astronomy at Harvard and the director of their Radio Astronomy SETI project. I had the pleasure of kibitzing electronics with him a few years ago at a SARA (Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers) meeting at the big radio observatory at Greenbank, WV. It was the most challenging technical discussion I had ever been in. Horowitz takes no prisoners when in a discussion. His writing style, however, is extremely lucid and uncluttered with a lot of gratuitous math. ***** Another great resource for learning electronic design is the Radio Amateurs Handbook http://www.arrl.org/catalog/index.php3?category=Technical%2C+Electronics%2C+and+Communications+Reference This book is in it's 81st printing and has some great chapters on basic electronic design that are geared toward the beginner.
