You can, of course, transmit data over the same FM link that you range with.
Just use a modem audio frequency that will not interfere with a (to be added
later) phase ranging tone.

As far as range goes for status data, you can always use a repeater. (You
could even use a non-duplex store and forward repeater with a conventional
cheap push-to-talk type transceiver.)
