I don't use a C compiler, so I can't help you directly. However, your compiler manufacturer might have examples on their website, and there is a fantastic code library at the http://www.piclist.com website. As I'm sure others will chime in, it may help you to write a few programs in assembly so as to better learn the functioning of the chip.
