I built a system of remote clocks that operated over two wires. The master used a low-rate (205 Hz) PWM to modulate (on/off control) a smoothed but unregulated DC power supply. A zero bit was represented by 8/9 of a bit time on and 1/9 of a bit time off. A one bit was represented by 7/9 of a bit time on and 2/9 of a bit time off. A frame sync was represented by 6/9 of a bit time on and 3/9 of a bit time off. The slaves used an isolating diode and a capacitor to hold their power up while the source was shut off. Each slave regulated its own power supply. This permits only one way communications, but should be able to handle arbitrary amounts of power.
