Easiest is probably the 1-wire phantom powering method, but sinking 1A @
5V is not very, eh, elegant. I would go for a modulated approach. Just
power the device with 5 Volt, make sure the HF impedance on both sides
is high (some coils will do), modulate your data on a carrier and couple
it onto the power line. Maybe the easiest way would be to use an IR
diode and a canned IR receiver at the far end to demodulate the data.
