A rheostat will glow orange if the power is used for experiments by enterprising youngsters. Semiconductors would not have the same show effect and may lower the retail value of the product (e.g. 'that c**p electronic speed control burned out immediately when I charged the SLA battery with it - get the old kind, they don't make them like they used to anymore).
