There is a variable control on the time base setting, IIRC the knob that is concentric with the time/div switch. Make sure this is in the calibrated position. If it is not, then the time/div will always be longer. The variable control has a detent on the calibrated end of its travel so that it will always lock in and not be easily moved off. There may also be an indicator lamp near the time/div calibration to show when the variable knob is off the calibrated position.
