We have Fujikura splicing equipt. A mere $30K for each unit. Does single fibers up to 12 fiber ribbons. Semi automated. Cleaving and removal of 250u jacketing is by hand using their fixtures and cleaver. Splice protectors are installed over the splice and shrunk down. This is for single mode 250u fiber. Fitel also makes equipment. You still have to buy the appropriate ends which is where the cost is. Unless you plan on lapping and polishing your own interfaces which I doubt. Then there's training just on fiber splicing alone. Patchcords are pretty cheap. Check out FIS.
