Hmmm I have had lots of problems with the serial port on my big PC (also a 2 GHz system), running XP, using any serial programmer and even with a few other serial thingies. But no problem whatsoever when I use an USB-to-serial converter with the same machine, so that is what I have user ever since. I had always suspected my hardware, but maybe there is something funny with a certain windows/hardware combination. Could you try an USB-to-serial converter?
