We have a winner!...... A delay is required before sending the control characters after regular text characters. I tested it after the formfeed only, and it did not display correctly. When inserting the delay AFTER the text and before the control chars, fine. >From the delays that I tried, it looks like a minimum of 600uS is required on 20mHz processor at 19.2k.
