Have you ever seen anything more outrageously accurate but empty
of real content?

They still get advertised here in the UK from time to time, I've been tempted
 to buy one of these for years, just to see if the knobs on the base actually
*do*
anything .. odds on they're just glued in :)

... as for what looks like ferrite collars on the telescopic antennae...
well I'm no RF wizard but surely that can't help can it?
