I just finished up a frustrating week messing with trying to make my first homebrew PCB. I finally was successful, and I thought I'd post about it, first of all just for the sake of bragging, but also to encourage those of you who are still reluctant to give this a try. I made up a single-sided board in Eagle to mount an ADXL202 accelerometer to try out home-etching. I tried transferring my design to the PCB via laser printer transfer, but this was fairly unsatisfactory. Copier toner seems to work better, I guess because it's not as thoroughly attached to the paper as laser toner (?). I tried a bunch of different iron heat settings and transfer procedures, but finally settled on using a clothes iron set to "wool" for 2 mins or so, and then dunking the PCB into a glass of water to soften and peel the paper without lifting the toner. I touched up the toner with a Sharpie marker, and threw it into a sour cream container full of 75% Ferric Chloride (as per the instructions on the FC bottle) nested into a larger container full of nice hot water. With this setup, the board etched in 5 mins or so, and I got some pretty severe pitting and undercutting of tracks. I watered the mixture down to about 40% FC at about 90 deg. F. This resulted in a perfect etching in about 10 min. I broke my only PCB drill while loading it into the drill press, so I converted the board to SMT (i.e., "deadbugging" all non-surface mount components) at the last minute. I have yet to try the board out, but it looks pretty good. Cool, huh? Now on to re-design my PC's motherboard!
