Well, a friend of mine has done that. He uses a special Permalloy "cone" to
"concentrate" the magnetic field looking for distortions. He used a kmz10 or
something. The unit was far 20 Mts. from the road. I suppose someone could
put some info into a DSP to determine the car profile or if there was more
than one car at the same time.

Also may be used as complement to weapons detection! Don't you think?

I.e. it's possible to detect even which type of vechicle, with enough data
collection one should be able to detect speed and make of the car to ;)
And as a bonus they even placed the sensor at the side of the road in one
test
(instead of under the middle of the road).
Hey maybe it's possible to store the spectra (curve) from each 'known'
vehicle and 'annouce'
even who, instead of 'someone', is comming :)

Also there is an extention to the family, whic is intriguing for detecting
vehicles :)
