I was just reading an article in Popular Mechanics about how they test ejection seats. There is a nice photo of the front half of a F14 running on rails pushed by what looks like two huge solid propellant rockets in the back. The legend says this is at China Lake, in California. That would be 'jet propulsion'. The speed must have been transsonic or above judging from what I can see in the picture (air distortion around a steel girder forms 180 degree apex angle). I suspect that your high speed trains do not compete in this class but this shows that it can be done.
