I've been using CVS for revision control for some years. There is a windows version that I now use at http://www.wincvs.org/. A couple of things I like about this method is that you create (hopefully) a log entry for every check-in and you can also check-in binary files such as software tools, schematic, pcb, and other project files. Once you have it set up, its as easy as pie to check-in often and show differences between various versions of text files. Be sure to regularly backup your repository.
