I remember once taking apart one of the X10 modules available at Radio Shack, and being surprised at how easy it would be to stuff my own circuit in the box. They are fairly cheap. I'd look around and see what else you can find that plugs into the wall. Fluke Scopemeter wall warts come apart very nicely, just a few screws, so stupid glue or anything. Perfect for putting new stuff in there, or, say, draining the water out of it (don't ask...).
