My son was only 4 when he figured out how to take off in a 747 in the MicroSoft Flight Sim. He found the CD himself one day, turned on the PC and started playing around with it. I think if kids get physical feedback from what they do then they will learn quickly, especially with some simple guidance. LED flashing, simple motor control, and the like.
