For this age (in general) PICs are far to complicated,
even if you use a simple language like JAL or  even simpeler  Basic-87.
What works great for this age is the LEGO-RCX, although it might be more
expensive.
If you look at the RIS software, it's both inviting and awfull simple to
program.
