I seem to be havving trouble with this routine

AFAICS they're the same s/w

The problem is that the conversion never finishes and loops
endlessly. I wonder if anyone who has got a working version
of this (maybe one of the authors) can verify that it does work
as presented and/or can spot a mistake on my part
