Thanks to all who have given very useful and informative replies.  It's
been an interesting learning exercise, and I feel a bit more
enlightened!  I'm satisfied that the circuit can probably just about be
made to work, but marginally due to all the leakages and the chip's
output drive.  I think I'll now use one of the 12F675s I have around
instead.
