I recently sold my Parallax ICE for the pic and purchased and ICD2 for use with the newer PICMicro parts. I've been very pleased with my decision. I use the ICD2 ICSP to program the pic on my propagation misting timer. I've put a 5-pin 0.1" header on-board and made a small PCB to convert from the RJ connector to the 5-pin header (Also use this for connecting ICD2 to experimenter strips). So, the ICD2 can used as either a ICD or programmer. When used as an ICD, the FLASH in the PICMicro is still programmed but the debug mode configuration bit is set. I recently finished the design of a small ICSP board I call the "uProg" with a mating 5-pin connector (to my products) at one end, a PIC along with some other electronics, and a RJ connector at the other. If any of my customer's require a firmware upgrade, I'll load up the upgrade on the uProg and send it to them. They connect the uProg to the 5-pin header, upgrade their firmware, and send the device back to me.
