Linear methods have a great waste of energy as heating, So PWM may be better in this case. As mike said, using a bipolar transistor isn't a good idea at all. Try a mosfet. Other thing to care about is that incandescent lamps are not linear light sources. Reducing the current to 1/2 from the nominal value will almost null the brightness.
