My programmer (Wisp628 with xwisp PC software) reads and shows the
revision code when it identifies the chip. By default it does this only
when it actually has to do something, but you can trick it by
deselecting all regions (code,data,fuses) and then giving a 'get'
command:

d:\> xwisp select -A get
XWisp 1.08, command line mode
hardware: Wisp628 1.09 (fast)
target: 18f252, revision 07 (ID=0407)
OK

This takes just a second or two, and does not affect the content of the
chip at all. I guess other programmers can be tricked to do the same?
