Unfortunately, the fun stuff is not always what feeds your family. The nasty, boring, frustrating stuff is what pays the best. After you retire, you get a better chance to choose what you pursue. Unfortunately, it is also on your personal budget. It is also much more difficult to stick with projects and stay focused without a manager looking over your shoulder. As long as you enjoy learning, it is fun. When you get tired of keeping up, the whole field can leave you behind! The first FCC test I took did not have solid state devices on it, unless you count selenium rectifiers... I been trying to keep up a looong time.
