I thought of this, or even an RTL and....but still, "external
components"....so will be the last resort.

Another idea I had was to source the IR LED from the USART TX pin, and sink
it into the PWM CCP pin....

I didn't get where this would come in. Don't most remotes/receivers just use
plain NRZ (which is what the USART uses too) for line coding? NRZ would
leave the door open for what, 8 (bar start/stop bits) possible continous
"1/ons"?
