Problem is, as Wouter also mentioned, if you send a continuse carrier for to long (and that's not long at all), most IR receivers (as the TSOP range) with just shout down it's output. You can't even send a continuse *modulated* carried, you have to have a longer pause at intervalls specified in the data sheets. The UART way of doing things isn't very good for IR comms at all, IMHO. And bit-banging a IR link isn't much harder then bit-banging a normal serial comm.
