Given essentially no rewards for long-time loyalty, and increasing difficulties in finding interesting new jobs due to a combination of age discrimination, skill "currency" decay, and being paid too much, it seems to me that eventually you reach a point where retirement becomes attractive. If you can afford it. What you do AFTER retirement is a separate question. You either develop other interests in your 30-50 years working, or you keep doing the same stuff. Or combinations thereof. (that said, I think there's a big "push" for people to retire even if they prefer to go on doing the same thing.)
