Now that microcontrollers are "popular", "microcontroller unit" is probably what one is referring to. Originally, "MCU" stood for "microcomputer unit" which simply meant a microprocessor (MPU) with memory. I believe those definitions are in a set of Motorola 8 -bit microwhatever data books I got 15 yrs ago. They're stored away. That year they were brown, my last set of Mot books were blue. Who cares?
