I've had a quick look at that guy's linux code and it mentions the 'documentation' on the USB protocol used. That makes me feel slightly less inferior, anyway :) His code looks very well commented so as you say, it's a good starting point. I think I'll get myself one of these PICKit1's and see if I can expand on it to make it more versatile. I've always wanted to make a USB box with a PIC in it....
