Thanks to all that replied :o)

I've switched to a 10 kHz switching frequency (so I can check with a speaker
whether its running, by lack of a scope) and it's working now...
This has the advantage over magnets/generators that the circuit will still be
powered when the fan stops, what would also be a problem using brushes.
