We use Wellers and they are 24V AC. Inside a station is a 240AC->24AC transformer, switch and a fuse and nothing else. Temperature control is through magnet on the tip and a spring loaded switch with a magnet in the handle. When the tip gets too hot it looses its magnetic properties and the switch breaks.
