I finally learned that the Microchip instruction set has been
elaborated in devices I haven't used yet (duh), and the listings of
square root routines in the piclist archives are just fine.

However, since I'm using a 16F part, I had to emulate the SUBWFB and
ADDWFC instructions. The former required 11 words and the latter 8.
One begins to appreciate the benefits of the later devices.
