Line level is a relative term in a lot of hi-fi specs. Typically it is an unbalanced, -10db at 10k for a 0db reference. Some specs vary from that level. Conversion is not critical. Your 555 is outputting more than the above level. Just pad it with a voltage divider resistor network. You will have to experiment with the values. As long as nothing else is tied to the line input, you might just get away with a series resistor from the 555 output to the line in. If you want to get technical, use a t-pad with all three resistors at 10k, and if the level is too high, the input resistor from the 555 can be increased.
