IIRC, Line level means typical signal is 1v peak to peak, not to drop below -1v or go above 1v (so you could do a 2v peak to peak centered at 0v) into a load. I've seen loads of 10k, and some as low a 47ohms - I don't know what 'standard' is. You should be able to do a quick and dirty voltage divider. Put a 390 ohm resistor at the output of the 555, then a 100ohm resistor from the other side of the 390 to ground. Then the junction of the two resisters will be about 0-1v peak to peak.
