I know this thread is pretty old now, but just discovered a couple of
devices of possible use to the original poster.


TI TPS2370
Linear Technology LTC4257

Both are designed to go between the PoE connection and the local converter
to give controlled power on, and handle the detection by the device
supplying the power. Have not gone as far as checking to see if they are pin
compatible, but a quick glance suggests they are functionally equivalent.
