I have seen prototype boards with PTH pads at 50 thou centres instead of the
common 100 thou centres, which appear to be designed for soldering these
sort of chips down. The example I saw was about 4x6 inches, with about a 2
inch square of 50 thou pitch pads/holes, and the rest in 100 thou pitch
pads/holes. In the UK I think it was bought from RS - yeah had a look on my
CD and found it. Made by Roth Elektronik, RS code #206-5813, 2065829 and
343-2832, Roth code #RE435EP, RE436EP and RE437EP.
