Why not start straight in with a 16F876 which already has analogue inputs, and has an Incircuit Debugger capability, or better yet an 18F252 which has a nicer architecture than the 16F series, along with analogue inputs and still has a debugger capability, although you need to buy an ICD2 to deal with this.
