Performance is terrible.=20 Installing 'everything' is not a good idea. You probably have about 2500 programs installed now. RH8 cannot be compared with W98, maybe compare with XP on the same machine, with all the applications installed. 500MHz is at the lowest limit of what is recommended for a RH8 installation by the manufacturer afaik. FYI I post to this list (and do all my browsing etc) using a 233MHz K6 machine, using 1024x768 and 800x600 16bit graphics. It runs a lot of applications. I use the Opera browser. I also run graphics Linux on 486DX100/24MB ram (over ethernet) and even 386DX and even (limited applications) 386SX/33 (!!) over network (X11 over network). I even tried X11 (uncompressed protocol) over 115kBaud serial line ppp. Works slowly, but flawlessly. Switching to a lighter desktop (window manager - probably you have kde or gnome) will help with speed. Also more ram is better than faster cpu. 500MHz should have 128MB ram to be reasonable imho. Many 'integrated' cpus advertised as 500MHz are in fact slower by design (is it Intel or AMD ?). Not having the drivers for the board is a definite minus. Try the board maker's website, some now have Linux drivers for download. Peter -- http://www.piclist.com hint: To leave the PICList mailto:piclist-unsubscribe-request@mitvma.mit.edu
