Someone suggested using "water slide" printable decals for this purpose.
Its used for modeling decals.  The stuff is printed like normal, wet the
paper and stick it to the board.  Apparently you can solder through it,
although I'd imagine the plastic residues would build up on your tip
eventually.  I haven't tried it myself, but it seems workable.

What I would like is a simple homebrew method for applying a solder mask.

method for getting a component layout print onto the board. I think this is
called the silkscreen, but correct me if I'm wrong (the typically white
print that marks where the components go). Has anyone ever tackled this in a
DIY scenario? I'd be interested to hear any ideas.
