Olin: The 16C54 is the oldest CMOS PIC, so it's well-understood, tested and characterized, supported by all the development tools, known to be bug-free, and really really cheap. Those are all good reasons to use it... AND, by the way, they sound a lot like your own reasons for using Assembly rather than C. Historically, the 16C5x parts were always Microchip's biggest sellers.
