To clarify my original post, I am using a fixed point 16-bit integer as
a variable of distance, where each bit
represents 1/10 of one inch.  Useable range for this variable will be
0-100 feet or 0-12000 as seen by the
variable.  Resolution is 1/10 of one inch.

For this current application, meters is used as well.  The end user has
the choice to view output in meters
or in inches.
