Nope, I was thinking of a common emitter type config, resistor to the positive rail, other end to the collector, the emitter connected to ground and you input connected to the base, through a resistor. Speaker connected to the collector, preferable through a cap to prevent DC flow through the speaker and ensure correct biasing. Dead simple circuit, not very powerful though (in practical terms), VERY wasteful in power, but it works. Quite tolerable if you're just going to feed it square waves.
